How to use Sink In in Safari on Mac
Four short steps, and Safari on your Mac underlines phrasal verbs on every page you read. It takes about a minute.
Before you start
The Safari extension is part of Sink In for Mac. Get Sink In from the Mac App Store, or update it if you already have it. You do not need to install anything else. The extension uses your account and your study list from the Mac app, so there is no second login.
The lines and the meaning cards are free, and you can save 20 phrasal verbs to your study list. Sink In Pro lets you save as many as you want and finds the meaning that fits each sentence.
The steps are for Safari 26. On iPhone or iPad, see the iPhone guide.
1. Open Sink In once
Open Sink In from your Applications folder. This lets the extension use your account and your study list. You do not need to keep the app open after that.
2. Turn on the extension
Open Safari. If you see New Extension Available, click Turn On Extension.
If you do not see it, choose Safari > Settings and click Extensions. Tick the box next to Sink In: Phrasal Verb Highlighter.
3. Let Sink In read web pages
On the same Extensions screen, click Sink In: Phrasal Verb Highlighter in the list. On the right, click Always Allow on Every Website… and confirm. Now Sink In works on every page you open.
If Safari asks about Sink In on a page, choose Always Allow on Every Website. If you choose Allow for One Day, Safari asks again tomorrow.
Why does Safari show a warning?
Safari shows the same text for every extension that reads web pages. Sink In needs to read the text to find the phrasal verbs, and it does this on your Mac. It sends sentences only when you ask it to pick the right meaning: when you click Find the meaning that fits, or turn that on for a site. Then it sends only the sentences with phrasal verbs, never the whole page.
4. Read and click
New phrasal verbs on the page now have a dotted line. Click one to see its meanings, an example and its CEFR level. Click Save to add it to your study list and practise it in Sink In for Mac. If you already know it, click I know it. Phrasal verbs in your study list get a solid blue line.
Many phrasal verbs have more than one meaning. With Pro, click Find the meaning that fits, and Sink In reads the sentence and shows the right one. Then tick the box that appears to do this on every page of that site.
To change what Sink In shows, click the Sink In button in the Safari toolbar. You can turn the lines off, show the phrasal verbs you already know, and see how many you are learning.
If it does not work
- Sink In is not in the list. Update Sink In from the Mac App Store and open it once. Then quit Safari and open it again.
- No lines on the page. Reload the page. Check that the box next to Sink In in Safari > Settings > Extensions is ticked. Then click Websites, click Sink In under Extensions, and check that When visiting other websites is set to Allow, and that this site is not set to Deny.
- Your saves are not in the app. Open Sink In for Mac. The app adds them to your study list when it opens.
- You cannot save more. Your free study list holds 20 phrasal verbs. Remove the ones you know in Sink In for Mac, or get Sink In Pro to save as many as you want.
